The Alliance to Save Cleveland High has been established to provide a coordinating and unifying role among individuals and community organizations:

• To save Cleveland High School and restore the historic building for the purpose of returning the Naval Junior ROTC program to a healthy physical environment as quickly as possible.
• To assist in creating a modern, safe, state-of-the-art high school with academic excellence.

Position Statement

The Alliance to Save Cleveland High:

• Shares concerns about the current unhealthy environment at Cleveland and its impact on students’ health.
• Supports measures to temporarily relocate students with the goal of bringing NJROTC cadets back after renovation.
• Proposes independent evaluation of conditions at the school and professional, cost-effective restoration planning and execution.
• Believes the highest and best use of this building is for a school.
• Opposes any measures that disrespect the community or the historical and architectural value of the school.
• Proposes a new model for community involvement in the community’s schools and good stewardship of the community’s school buildings – the Framework for Collaborative Action (FCA)

Issue Definition

The Alliance to Save Cleveland High defines the current challenge facing Cleveland High School as to how to: address the immediate health concerns of the students, resolve the physical deficiencies, sustain the community value of the school, and to maintain the historical and architectural integrity of the building.

We strongly disagree with the argument that the issue is about making a choice between the students’ health and saving the building. This narrow definition of the issue does not facilitate finding responsible and sustainable solutions for community schools such as Cleveland High School.
